Fish Bowls
If you’re a first time pet owner and are looking for something small, you should begin with a fish or two in a fish bowl. It should ideally hold no less than two gallons of water.
Fish bowls don’t have a filtering system like other aquariums. However, the same treatment is performed just like any ordinary aquarium. These include feeding the fish and covering the top of the bowl. The only difference is that about twenty percent of the water has to be replaced gradually twice a week. This is done to prevent ammonia poisoning from killing the fish inside.
Cool Water Aquariums
If the fish are getting bigger and you are satisfied with your kids’ efforts in taking good care of their fish, then it is a good time to transfer the fish into a bigger container. Cool water aquariums should be the next in line as they come with a filtering system.
Cool water aquariums come in different sizes but keep in mind that the rule of thumb is that a fish measuring one foot is equivalent to one gallon of water. If you just happen to have two fish measuring at three feet each then it is best to get a ten gallon aquarium to allow space for them to grow.
Warm Water Aquarium
Another type of aquarium is a warm water aquarium. The only modification here is that it has a water heater. This type of aquarium requires more maintenance. Flakes and pellets can be given as food to fish in this aquarium. However, blood worms can be fed to any fish with an appetite.
The aquarium must be cleaned every two weeks or once a month. This has to be done because the waste from the fish can reach a point where it starts to cloud up the glass. A fish net is the best way to get the fish out of the tank temporarily until the cleaning is done.
If you’re looking for something different in your house that’s truly relaxing and refreshing than invest in an aquarium. It sure to turn heads in the house.
