AQUARIUM FILTER SUPPLIES

Aquarium filters come in many sizes to suit the needs of your aquarium and the species of fish and aquatic life in your aquarium.

Corner or Box Filter

For simple home aquariums, the corner or box filter is the way to go. This aquarium filter, houses a carbon filter and floss which are in turn linked to an air pump.

Undergravel filters or UGF which has been around for a long time are commonly found with beginner’s aquarium kits or sea water aquarium owners. With the underwater gravel filter, an inch or so of gravel is placed at the bottom of the tank. This UGF, just like the corner box filter, is connected to an air pump which is kept on regularly.

Canister Filter

A canister aquarium filter hangs off the side of the aquarium. It houses an internal pump which is attached to a sealed container. The sealed container acts as a trap for waste and other debris in the water.

Fluidized Bed Filter

The Fluidized Bed aquarium filter is similar to the canister filter; it hangs on the wall of the aquarium. The filter includes a fluidized bed of particles, such as sand, for removing ammonia from the water.

Wheel Filter

One of the most common wheel filters is the BIO-Wheel. These aquarium filters are fixed onto the back of the aquariums. They draw up water from the bottom of the tank with the help of a siphoning tube. When this is done, it than drains the water back into the aquarium.

The water that is drained back is filtered through a pad containing carbon, sponge, floss and zeolite. These filters allow some bacteria, which grow on it, to go through a process of getting rid of harmful wastes and debris. The wheel filters require constant maintenance. These include changing the filter pads at least every three to four weeks and cleaning the siphoning tube thoroughly.

Sponge Filter

Sponge aquarium filters are appropriate for those who plan to keep baby fish. This is because the density of the sponge holds the light and delicate baby fish from being sucked and drawn into the filter. The sponges allow small plankton and other food to grow on its surface allowing baby fish to nibble on them easily. However, the downside to this type of aquarium filter is that the baby fish can easily get caught under the sponge filters. This is good reason why the sponge filter should not be at the bottom of the aquarium.

Not only are aquarium filters the only way to keep your aquarium clean, they are also essential to the overall good health of life in your aquarium.
