Responsible Aquarium Ownership
Aquarium creation and ownership has drawn the interest of a good number of people. Some do theses as hobbies while others use it as business opportunities. If all the aquarium owners in the world acquired aquatic organisms from the wild, then the whole practice would place huge pressures on the already diminished natural aquatic environment. This would not be sustainable in the long run. Unsustainable fishing practices and illegal activities have already immensely exhausted the world’s fish stock and have placed the future of the world’s dependence on seafood in danger. Therefore, we urge aquarium owners not to further add to the problem by purchasing or obtaining fish from the wild for recreational purposes.
In addition to obtaining fish and other aquatic organisms from the wild for recreation, you should also be aware that live coral extraction from the wild affects the livelihood of hundreds of reef depending species. This is because fish and other organisms depend on coral for shelter and for food and if the corals are removed both of this would disappear. If the corals are to grow back and regenerate, it would take a long time. So its removal from the reef can have a lasting effect. Without removing the fun from the activity, an equally satisfying alternative is the use of artificial coral (live rock) or other material for your aquarium. Do not take live coral and place it in your aquarium.
A final thought to consider is that if for some reason you decide you would like to dismantle your tank, remember to discard the contents of your aquarium wisely. If the organisms are still alive, do not just dump it in any stream or live body of water. Even though you may feel that you are doing the fish a favor, it is also important to preserve the biodiversity, balance and stability of local aquatic or marine ecosystems. Do not introduce foreign species such as aquarium algae, fish sicknesses and other problems to a local area. Doing so will upset the balance of species and be a threat to the fragile ecosystem. The alternative to dumping of the aquarium content into local waterways is by simply donating them to other aquarium lovers.
