Introducing fish tank plants would make the environment in the aquarium friendlier for the fish. There is no harm in placing live or even plastic plants in the tank because they will make the fish feel more secure. This also puts less stress on them and serves as a good hiding place for them too.

It is more advisable though to place live plants instead of artificial ones in the aquarium because they will also serve as a filter and maintain the quality of the water in the tank. It is not just for aesthetic purposes only. In actual fact, plants in the tank grow from the excretion of fish.

Though plants are good for the fish in an aquarium, not all types’ of plants should be placed in the tanks because some plants have better aquarium characteristics than others. For instance, the Java Moss or the Java Fern should be the plants of choice for beginners because they are considered to be the strongest since it can survive the highest pH level that are harmful to most fish.

Alternatives should only be used or taken if these plants are not available. Be sure to ask the sales clerk at the pet shop for these. Not all the plants are green so it would be good to try a different color and always take note that there are two major aquarium plant set-up types, like Fresh water aquarium plants and seawater plants.

Photosynthesis is the scientific term that expresses that aquarium plants need sunlight to grow. Though this is true, getting direct sunlight on the fish can be quite harmful. The best alternative would be to use fluorescent tubes which will do the job without affecting the fish.

Do pay close attention to the plants because some parts may die and this should be immediately removed from the tank to avoid harming the fish.
