It does a good job keeping the water clean and clear. But if you want unsurpassed, top notch water filtration go Eheim. I've owned quite a few models including the gigantic 2080, and you cant compare the two brands. The two brands are made in Germany but Fluvals are no where near as good. If you had to judge the two brands, Fluvals are the black sheep of the family. They are however easier to clean than the Eheims. The Fluval 405 is a decent filter, but there is water by pass.
